Newton Highlands Station Accessibility Improvements
Upgrades to the Newton Highlands Station have been in the planning and design phases since 2016. The design will be completed in spring 2023, with construction anticipated to begin in late 2023 or early 2024. These upgrades will make the station accessible for everyone, significantly improving accessibility of the Green Line.
In December 2020, crews installed temporary accessibility improvements at Newton Highlands as part of Green Line D Track and Signal Replacement—the raised outbound platform will serve riders until the final design is constructed.
- Contract awarded: Expected fall 2023

Building a Better T
As part of our $9.6 billion, 5-year capital investment plan, we're renovating stations, modernizing fare collection systems, upgrading services for our buses, subways, and ferries, and improving the accessibility of the entire system.
Why We're Doing This Work
The overall accessibility of the MBTA has improved significantly in the last decade, but a number of stations on the Green Line present numerous barriers to access for people with disabilities. At Newton Highlands, these barriers include station access and boarding and exiting trains.
Permanent station upgrades will include:
- ADA/MAAB compliant ramps and access paths from Walnut St, Hyde St, and Station Ave
- A raised boarding platform with a tactile edge for inbound and outbound trains
- Multiple accessible pedestrian crossings connecting inbound and outbound platforms
- New heated shelters in the inbound platform
- New benches, new bicycle shelters, new signage
- New lighting, communication, and security equipment
