Better Bus Project Kickoff

Updated on May 23, 2018

In early May 2018, MBTA launched the Better Bus Project, a program focused on improving the existing bus network through operational changes, targeted capital investments, and stakeholder partnerships.

Through 2018 and 2019, the Better Bus Project team will collect feedback from communities and community leaders to better understand the quality of bus service. They will measure these against the bus-service delivery standards approved by the Fiscal and Management Control Board (FMCB) in early 2017.

As submitted to the FMCB in April 2018, the initial outreach phase of the Better Bus Project includes:

  • Evaluating existing bus service.
  • Identifying bus service strengths, weaknesses, issues, and opportunities.
  • Identifying improvement opportunities, which may include service and operational changes, capital investments, and partnerships with municipalities.
  • Developing, evaluating, and vetting scenarios
  • Implementing improvements throughout the bus network

This outreach and analysis phase is expected to last through the summer. We welcome your feedback online and in person at FMCB meetings, meetings in your communities, and via our online form.

Better Bus Outreach Complete, Summer 2018

We heard from more than 3,000 bus riders, in addition to bus operators and community leaders at meetings and through our street teams.

In early 2019, we’ll share our analysis of these findings, and propose near-term changes to the routes we think could benefit the most from strategic changes, such as:

  • More frequent, reliable service all day
  • More consistently spaced stops
  • A reduction on the complexity of many routes
  • Solutions for slow service that is getting slower
  • Solutions for overcrowded buses
  • Routes that start earlier and run later in the day
